Back to School Outfit Ideas

I’m excited! I’m finally posting a back to school outfit ideas post! I wanted to film outfits that I thought were truly wearable and appropriate for most schools. That means you won’t see any short-shorts, outstanding cleavage and or anything too fussy.

The primary reason for going to school is to learn and not to look one’s best, obviously. Comfort is key, but wearing clothes that are also flattering never hurts!

This post will have a short video, pictures and advice about what to wear back to school.

Here is my outfit line up for the first week of school:

Oversized Printed Top

As explained in the video, I’m a university student and I’ll often wear a tote because I don’t carry many books around. I love this grey tote from H&M because it has mixed media, suede on top and man-made faux leather on the bottom. I usually have to keep my bag on the floor between my legs in class, but that doesn’t bother me so much because this bag is synthetic on the bottom.

I’m wearing Zara leggings in this composition: 29% polyamide, 68% polyester, 3% elastine. These are the leggings that are thick enough for fall and winter months, they are also opaque enough to wear as pants. I prefer leggings and jeggings over jeans for school since it’s more comfortable to wear them when sitting for long periods of time.

Lastly, I choose a printed top from H&M and some camel coloured sling-back sandals from Zara.

Denim Dress

There are endless possibilities with denim, pants are not the only alternative. I got this denim dress on sale at Forever 21 last year (also featured here). I love it because it was a casual draw string at the waist and incorporates to shades of denim. This grey sweater from Zara completes the look by added some texture, warmth and contrast. I find it handy to dress with layers for school because throughout the day the temperature changes, particularly when you’re in air conditioning.

Printed Midi Skirt

I thrifted this lovely skirt last year and haven’t gotten around to wearing it until now. It’s not uncommon to run into someone at school who may have the same bag, top or bottom, but wearing something thrifted eliminates that possibility.  Midi skirts are also great for school because you won’t be breaking strict dress codes. I’ve paired the midi skirt with some suede loafers from Zara and a standard black tank.

Stripped Sweater

I recently purchased this stripped, nautical sweater on sale at Forever 21. Wearing white undoubtedly illuminates the complexion, which is perfect for days where you’ve had a bad night of sleep. Going for a more casual look, I’ve paired the look with cuffed dark wash jeggings from Mango and some flesh toned oxfords. I like to think of oxfords as a dressier version of canvas shoes (converses, keds, supergas and what not).

Floral Skater Dress

I stole this floral dress from mom a couple years back. I love skater dresses because they are cut in such away that they are flattering on most body types. I’ve paired the dress with a mustard yellow belt and that same grey cardigan. I love that this cardigan has subtle holes in the knit so that the floral pattern peeps through. I’ve finished off the look with my new favourite suede ankle boots from Zara, which I mention in my Zara Haul post.

I hope you enjoyed this post. Let know know what you’re be wearing on your first day of school in the comments below.

Very cute looks :)  Going to art school means you barely see any of this around though – most students dress like they just rolled out of bed or like they just walked out of a magazine which is something I love about my college.
