Thursday, September 6th was Montreal’s Fashion Night out. I attended the Montreal Fashion Week Exhibit 23, open to the public. Arsenal was the venue, a former shipyard in Griffintown. It’s an interesting neighbourhood that has many antique shops and small restaurants along Notre Dame. It’s a nice change from Old Montreal. The exhibit included the following emerging designers: atelier b., DAVMANI, Dare by Gwen Madiba, La Raffinerie, LaLaYeah, and Tamé.
Unlike a runway show, models wearing the designer creations remained still and posed for photos. Decorative props such as seen below, almost like a store front window, laid out for display along side the designers’ collections. Indeed, it was much like an Exhibition as the name would suggest. We took some photos of the displays.
A love for vintage and minimalism shines through in this display, don’t you think? Atelier b. is a line “inspired by industrial design and production” and created with sustainable materials. The line included blues, reds and vintage inspired patterns, such as gingham.
The DAVMANI display had models in industrial neo-goth feeling attire, with textured corsets and rugged footwear. There were many unique statement pieces that would entice any woman who likes to stand out. The ring and cuff above are nature inspired, Marie Fortin in specializes in abstract pieces as well.
La Raffinerie displayed a collection of colorful necklaces and earrings inspired by Brazil for Spring/Summer 2013. The entire display was filled with color blocking statement pieces. I could envision wearing these pieces effortlessly with jeans and a t-shirt to an evening cocktail dress. All their pieces are handmade in Montreal. Additionally, La Raffinerie is environmentally concious about their packaging.
The designer of Tamé has a background in graphic design, which explains the multitude of textures used in the collection. Taking a look through their website, I see even the use of magnetic jewellery that can be worn in various ways, which is quite interesting. If you are curious about the necklaces above, take a look here. The brand also carries artwork and clothing.
