Travel – New York

From August 1st to 3rd, my mom and I ventured to New York for a mini vacation. This was my second trip to New York since 2009 (NYC vlog here). I love it there, but it’s so overwhelming when you come from a city that is a fraction of the size – Montreal.

I highly recommend planning what you are going to do while you are there. There are just too many things to do in New York. I’ll link things within this post as I go along. Hopefully this post will help you if you are planning a short trip to NYC.

We took a Greyhound overnight, the bus left at 11:30PM and arrived in New York at 7:30AM. It’s a painful trip, but we tried our best to get the most shut-eye on the bus.

We stayed at the Milford Plaza Hotel which is on 8th avenue, between 45th and 46th street. It was well worth the price and a mere 5 minute walk away from Time Square.

Day 1 in New York

It rained on and off all Thursday and check in was at 4PM. We left our bags at the hotel and dedicated the day to shopping around and sight-seeing, since the stores are open for long hours in Time Square. Some of the shops we hit up were Sephora, Inglot, Forever 21, and Toys “R” Us.

We also walked to Macy’s on 34th. There’s a cluster of stores in that area from Zara, H&M and Victoria’s Secret to name a few.

We were exhausted after all that window shopping, so we took a nap as soon as we checked in. Then we showered and headed out to do some evening sight-seeing.

We walked along 5th avenue. I don’t know about you, but most of the stores on there are out of my budget. The designer window displays are breath taking at night and well worth seeing if you are a fashion junkie.

On the walk towards 5th avenue, we also passed by Bryant Park. This place has a soft spot to me. My boyfriend and I ate at the Bryant Park Grill after a long walk in Central Park, back in 2009. It was over priced, but a romantic night out nonetheless.

Because of the rain, there was a beautiful fog covering the city’s sky scrapers.

Day 2 in New York

We spent our second on the water taxi, crossing the Brooklyn Bridge, catching a glimpse Statue of Liberty and walking through Greenwich and SoHo.

Can I just say that the Water Taxi was a life saver! There are breath taking views of the city from this boat. Additionally, it makes commuting easy and you don’t need to worry about traffic. For $28 (and an additional $7 if you would like to add another day) they have an all day hop-on and hop-off pass. There are also packages for memorial sights, double-decker buses, bike rentals and much more.

The taxi stops at:

  • Pier 17, South Street Seaport
  • Pier 1 – Brooklyn Bridge Park, DUMBO
  • Battery Park, Slip 6
  • Christopher Street, Pier 45
  • Pier 84, West 44th Street

The boat runs every 30 minutes. If you are lucky, Dalia will be your tour guide – all the crew members were very polite. Anyway, just Google New York Water Taxi to find out more.

We got off the Water Taxi at Pier 1 to walk across Brooklyn Bridge. For me, this was the highlight of the entire trip.

Lastly, we walked through Greenwich to get to SoHo. I love the architecture in this neighborhood. If you are a fan of Old Montreal or La Parte Vieja in San Sebastian, then you will love this area!

I didn’t take many pictures in SoHo, but I ate Chipotle for the first time ever. If you like Burrito Boys in Toronto, then go for Chipotle and have a Margarita too! I’m so sad that we have M4 and not Chipotle in Montreal, they are a world apart in taste – it’s sad!

We then took the Subway back to Time Square and spent the remainder of of trip there.
