Today, I’m going to discuss how to wear a dark lip. I’m featuring all of my go-to dark lipsticks from the drugstore; from easy to wear wine red, to dramatic burgundy and dark purple.
I’m also going to discuss how to complement dark lips with the rest of your makeup and show you how to apply them in the video below.
How to Wear a Dark Lip
How to complement dark lip
I think there are three general ways to wear your makeup with dark lips. All three ways I’m going to propose have one thing in common; a fresh face. A fresh face refers to minimal and non-dramatic blush, concealed blemished/under eye circles and an even skin tone.
First, you can dry a dark lip with 1. dramatic lashes that are generously coated with mascara, 2. winged eyeliner or both! Lastly, for a more daring and dramatic look – you can opt for a neutral smokey eye. Yes! I know what you’re going to say – it’s a general rule of thumb not to pair dramatic lips with dramatic eyes, but I’ve done it here. I didn’t go as dramatic as Sévérine in SkyFall, but still, let me know what you think.
If you have sparse eye brows, I recommend defining them when you wear a dark lip, otherwise the dark lips will look disproportionate in comparison to the rest of your makeup.
Choosing the right dark lipstick
Typically, when looking for a dark lipstick that suits you best; you should match your undertone. For example, if you have cool toned skin, then a cool toned berry shade or purple will suit you best. I personally disregard these rules and go for what I think looks good on me.
Prep the lips
The number one concern you should have when wearing a dark lip is having conditioned and flake free lips. Exfoliated and moisturised lips make the perfect canvas for dark lips.
How to apply dark lipstick
At this point, you can move on to lip liner or prep your lips with a coordinating lip liner. I sometimes use a brown, taupe, red or purple lip pencil to line my lips before applying the actual lipstick. A liner will ensure that your lipstick is opaque and long lasting, it can also prevent lipstick from bleeding outside of your lip line.
You can also wear a dark lip without a lip liner by using a concealer to line the outer outline of your lips. Or you can quite simply wear the dark lipstick as a stain by applying it and then gently dabbing it off.
Once you are ready to apply your dark lipstick, you should either alternate between a lip brush and the lipstick bullet or only use the lip brush. In the video above, I used the Make Up For Ever 300 Lip Brush (review soon). When using a lip brush, you have more control of the application than when you apply straight from the lipstick bullet.
Drugstore Dark Lipstick Swatches
Some of my favorite lip products come from the drugstore, not only because of their price point, but for their quality as well. Unless you know exactly what shade you love in a high end range, I think drugstore products are completely suitable – particularly if you don’t plan on wearing dark lips often.
